東京駅丸の内駅舎を設計した辰野金吾の恩師であるジョサイア・コンドルは、その生涯で日本に建設した建物は70近くにのぼると言われています。
そのひとつ、コンドルが最晩年に設計したのが、旧古河庭園です。古河財閥3代目当主 古河虎之助が施主として、コンドルに依頼。迎賓館であると同時に住まいとしても使われました。館内の随所には虎之助の想いと、それに応えたコンドルのこだわりが詰まっています。
洋館は、英国貴族の邸宅にならった古典様式で、レンガ造り（一部鉄骨）、天然スレート葺きの切妻屋根、出窓や玄関ポーチ屋根には銅板瓦棒葺きが採用されています。1階は接客のための洋室に、2階はほぼ和室、様式が交わることなく巧みに調和しています。武蔵野台地の地形を活かし、北側の小高い丘に洋館、斜面にコンドルがてがけた洋風庭園、低地に日本庭園を配することで、奥行きのある景観が生み出されています。
東京ステーションホテルからは、JR東京駅からJR京浜東北線で上中里駅まで約20分、駅から徒歩約7分。またはJR山手線 駒込駅下車、徒歩12分。都心から気軽に訪れることができる、歴史と建築、そして庭園美を一度に堪能できる名所です。東京駅を起点に、辰野金吾とジョサイア・コンドル、師弟が遺した建築を巡る旅をお楽しみください。

A Journey Through Western Architecture in Tokyo
Did you know that Josiah Conder, mentor to Kingo Tatsuno, architect of The Tokyo Station Marunouchi Building, designed nearly 70 buildings in Japan?
One of his final works was Kyu-Furukawa Gardens, commissioned by Toranosuke Furukawa, the third head of the Furukawa family. The mansion served as both a residence and a guest house, reflecting the owner`s vision and Conder`s thoughtful design.
Inspired by British country houses, the Western-style mansion features brick walls, slate gabled roofs, and copper roofing details. The first floor was designed for entertaining, while the second floor consists mainly of traditional Japanese-style rooms.
Conder also made clever use of the site`s natural topography, placing the mansion on the hill, an English-style garden along the slope, and a Japanese garden below.
Just about 20 minutes by train from The Tokyo Station Hotel, Kyu-Furukawa Gardens offers a wonderful combination of history, architecture, and garden beauty.

ドームの床には、4種類の大理石によって、あるモチーフが描かれています。
意匠のもととなったのは、戦後、焼失したドーム部分を覆うために設けられた天井のデザイン。古代ローマの神殿「パンテオン」をイメージしたといわれています。
東京駅丸の内駅舎の保存・復原工事では、このように建物が歩んできた歴史の一場面も、形を変えて大切に受け継がれています。
いつも見慣れた風景も、ふと足を止めて見渡してみると、これまで気づかなかった発見があるかもしれません。
The floor beneath the domes is crafted from four different types of marble, forming a motif with a story to tell.
Its design is inspired by the temporary ceiling installed after World War II to cover the original dome, which had been lost in the air raids. The ceiling is said to have been modeled after the Pantheon, the ancient Roman temple.
During the restoration of the Marunouchi Building of Tokyo Station, even fragments of the station’s history like this were carefully preserved in a new form.
Sometimes, all it takes is a moment to pause and look around. Familiar scenes may reveal details you have never noticed before.
